In this book, on the rich material of various sources, the features of the political system of one of the oldest centers of Russia are considered? Veliky Novgorod and almost the most legendary Italian city? Venice.
Is it possible to comprehend the political system of Veliky Novgorod in a pan -European context and primarily as a variant of the European Republican city system? Can Novgorod be considered a medieval commune? And if not, then why, and if so, in what sense? As a “object of comparison”, the book uses the Venetian political system. The similarities and differences of the “political people”, the fate of the national assembly, the legends of the semi -mythical primary founders, the cults of the sincere patron saint Mark and St. Sophia are considered. Chronicles, oaths of Doge and the earliest preserved acts of the Venetian Republic, Russian chronicles, letters and documents related to the activities of the Novgorod Hanseatic Office - the most important feature of the monograph is that the information about Novgorod and about Venice is taken from narrative and documentary sources subjected to thorough sources analysis
