The fate of Mikhail Ashenbrenner is unique. An officer, a lieutenant colonel, he became a member of the military wing of the terrorist organization People"s Volya, whose apotheosis of the activity was the murder of Tsar Alexander II, was arrested and sentenced to hang, which was replaced by twenty years in the Shlisselburg fortress. Clutched in old age by the Bolsheviks, he lived in the "House of Veterans of the Ilyich Revolution".
His memoirs are a story about how the young man who grew up in liberal traditions, having seen enough of army customs, violates the oath and ultimately enters the service of terror. Published in 1924 and since then not published, they are interesting primarily by showing the folk will from the inside and describe the prison life of the people"s volumes.
