The book included works by the best memoir literature of the 1812 era, published on the pages of the “Russian archive” at the end of the 19th century and caused enormous reader interest. The chosen memoirs of contemporaries of events were created by people of various ages, social and official position. And the notes of eyewitnesses themselves, diverse in the manner of narrative and ideological orientation, are associated with the events from the beginning of hostilities to the capture of Paris in 1814. Many took up the feather already at old age and wrote not only taking into account experience, but also taking into account the time, which raises controversial issues in its rightful place in true form. The “retrospective” of memoirs gives them the character of an analytical work, where each event, person or episode is considered by the author from different sides and are equipped with conclusions. The stories about what happened were always built and passed through the prism of personal perception of the authors, and the flow of life impressions of the people of the past has always turned to future generations, one might say, to history
