Schlomo-Dod Goytein (1900-1985)-one of the largest Jewish historians of the 20th century, Arabist and orientalist, the most famous researcher of the Cairo genius.
A multi -volume edition of the Mediterranean Society - the fruit of thirty years of work - is often called the best study of the history of the Middle East over the past hundred years. Each volume of this book is dedicated to a certain aspect of the life of Mediterranean Jewish society: economics, society, family relations, everyday life and individuals, residents of the medieval Mediterranean. In the Cairo genius, along with books of legal and religious content, many personal letters and various documents have been preserved, up to school notebooks, recipes and amulets. The analysis of these materials has become the basis for the reconstruction of the life of those times, so the book is filled with a large number of historical facts and previously unknown details.
After the death of the author, his student Jacob Lassner prepared for the University of California a reduced version of his work suitable for various university courses and intended for a wide range of readers.
