The work is dedicated to one of the directions of medieval diplomatic history: the struggle of the principalities of North Eastern Russia (Moscow, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod), the Russian Orthodox Church for priority in the reunification of Russian lands and the role of the so -called Byzantine factor in the formation of Russian statehood. In the center of the narrative is the Grand Duchy of Moscow late XIV - the middle of the 10th century, that is, the period of the reign of the Grand Dukes of Moscow Vasily I (1389-1425) and Vasily II (1425-1462) At this time, the “collecting of land” around Moscow acquired a stable character, and Tver and Nizhny Novgorod became the main opponents of Moscow. The feudal war of the second quarter of the 10th century noticeably weakened the central government, but could not stop the processes of unification. Supporting the Moscow princes and their policy of unification of land around Moscow, the Russian Orthodox Church relied on its spiritual authority and actively involved levers of ideological and political order, including international ties with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Based on archival and published materials, diplomatic relations of Constantinople, the Moscow Metropolitan Department, as well as the church bishop of Tver and Nizhny Novgorod are highlighted
