The understanding of the history of the formation of the medieval states of Europe is inconceivable without attention to the legacy of Rome and, therefore, without knowledge of the history of Italy. During the high Middle Ages, Italy at first became part of the empire of Charles the Great, survived its separation, repeated change of ruling dynasties, conflicts between secular and spiritual power, opposed the Arabs, laying the foundations of the future revival, when the country became, possibly, the most influential and rich in Europe. But until this time in the VIII century it was still very far away
