"In this book, we have gathered very different people whose life was connected with mathematics, or is simply completely devoted to it. And with great pleasure I read the memories of familiar people close to me, surprised and rejoiced primarily that such a wonderful book was born. And I would measure its potential success by the number of those boys who will choose this profession, as I chose it at one time ... "
Alexander Kuleshov, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, rector of Skoltha
Who are they, people who are engaged in mathematics professionally? What happens to mathematics today? We hear stories about luminous mice, collides, birch bark letters and new pills from all diseases, but what do we know about mathematics? We heard something about the list of Hilbert, that some superfluous equations seemed to be resolved, but in our view it simply does not fit like it: "sitting at work and solving examples", like at school.
Why is this necessary? What do mathematicians live in general and how did it all start?
In order to become more understandable to all of us, not mathematicians, we decided to talk with the leading specialists of the country. Mathematics is an accurate and very complicated science, which is why we decided to reduce the degree of intellectual tension and chose a relaxed format for a walk. Our heroes not only told us about themselves, their work and what mathematics is today, but also showed us the places significant for this science. Where they “made "and" make "scientists-mathematicians, where they lived, worked and simply gathered to talk to great minds, where and how significant discoveries were made.
Over 20 world -famous researchers from the leading mathematical centers of the country took part in the project, several interviews were included in the collection as "special issues", in which the authors slightly retreated from the format. The heroes of the project walked the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg, talked about life, mathematics, about mathematics around us, about science as a whole, about scientists, about music, about poetry. But you never know what a scientist and scientific journalist can talk about on a walk! Pour, read.
still do not believe that mathematics can be interesting? Then walk more likely! "Mathematical walks" calls
