The free territory, or Makhnovshchina, populated by almost seven millions of people, was protected by the revolutionary rebel army of Nestor Makhno. Nestor Makhno, who was popularly called "Older", each time turned the weapon against those who at that moment posed the greatest threat to the peasantry, signed an agreement with the Soviet regime three times and violated it three times.
