The real book was compiled by translations of the Greek texts of the VIII-X centuries, telling various stories, sometimes fantastic, about the ancient culture of Constantinople. Buildings and obscure statues abandoned in the “dark centuries” inspired superstitious horror to the townspeople, but the most daring of them tried to penetrate the secrets of ancient monuments, sometimes risking their lives. The mysterious ruins were overgrown with lush legends, and behind the ceremonial facade of the city, the unusual world of ancient gods and demons covered.
