An unusual book about Sicily offers different "keys" to the development of the island-through the first-a-Russian prisoner presented by the Russian reader about local saints who had a pronounced Byzantine-east appearance in the past, as well as through the anthology of the Russian presence-aristocrats, diplomats, artists, writers. The special emphasis is given on the two main moments of Russian-Sicilian relations- the stay of the imperial family in the Palermo family in 1845-1846 and the heroic participation of sailors in the salvation of the victims of earthquakes in Messin in 1908
