Icelandic sagas about ancient times invariably attract great attention to readers thanks to the amazing combination of historical and mythological motives. Such is the famous “The Tale of the Türifing Sword”, or the Heydrek Saga. It combines the history of several generations of a noble Scandinavian family, whose fate is connected by an ancient magical sword. The life of these generations took place in the fateful era of the great relocation of the peoples, and the Heydrek saga is a unique evidence of the preservation of the historical memory of the Scandinavians who carried this legend through the centuries.
The work of Professor I.V. Sharom (1906) was the first in Russian a major study of the Heydrek saga. The author conducted a deep historical analysis of the saga and the groups of plots that compiled it, put forward a number of fundamentally important ideas. The reprint of his work is accompanied by a biographical essay, a review of modern views on the problem and a new translation of the ancient text into Russian, which are prepared by the Medievist historian V.E. Senichev is specifically for this publication.
