Natalie Zemon Davis is a famous historian, honorary professor of Princeton University, author of numerous works on the culture of the New Age. Her famous book “Ladies on the side of the road” (1995) takes on the forefront of three European women of the 17th century, very different in life and intellectual experience, but similar in their extraordinary, determination and independence. Neither the Jewish Glickl Bas Judas Libe, nor the Catholic Marie Guir del Encarnasion, nor the Protestant Maria Sibilla Merian were royal or noble persons. Rather, they lived “on the sidelines” of the 17th century European, but their diaries, letters and travel notes, says N. Davis, give us a much more correct idea of early modern time than an official court history.
