The book is devoted to the study and introduction to the international scientific circulation of a unique photo collection from the MAE RAS collection, compiled by famous Russian diplomats and orientalists, Consul General of Russia in Kashgar N.F. Petrovsky (1837-1908) and secretary of the consulate Y. Ya. Lyutst (1854 - after 1924 )
The collection is important primarily by the fact that Kashgar recorded in the midst of a large game, during the period when the active penetration of foreigners into the edge just began. Photos of this period (1880-1890s) are known very little. Behind these temporary frames are much more (Sven Gedin, aurele Stein, Gustav Mannerheim and other researchers)
In this regard, the MAE RAS collection lies at the intersection of chronologies, civilizational transitions and many episodes of a large game and accompanying it "archaeological race". The Russian-English bilingual edition represents an impressive visual image of the region, which today again becomes a scene of active international politics and is of great importance for studying the history and culture of civilizations on the ancient Silk Road
