The book tells the history of relations between countries located on two opposite shores of the Pacific Ocean, from their first acquaintance to today. For more than two centuries, Japan and the United States experienced periods of mutual interest and hatred, admiration and desire to destroy each other. Today, these two countries, despite the continuing mutual economic competition and the almost complete dependence of Japan on America in the field of security, were able to find a formula for relations that suits them quite. Largely thanks to America, Japan followed the path of democracy, becoming one of the most egalitarian countries of the world with a minimal gap between wealth and poverty. At the same time, Japanese democracy is not a copy of the American, but a system taking into account the history of the country and national traditions. The same applies to a market economy. For Japan, the “invisible hand of the market” is not a dogma, but the opportunity to combine market mechanisms with the maximum satisfaction of the requests of their people. The Americans and the Japanese actively borrowed each other"s experience, learned to forgive mutual grievances and find the ways of resolving conflicts.
