For Soviet people, the collapse of the socialist system was both an absolute surprise and something quite logical. This dramatic event revealed an unusual paradox: despite the fact that most people perceived the Soviet system as eternal and unchanged, they, in principle, were always ready for its collapse. In the book of a professor at the University of California in Berkeley Alexei Yurchak, the Late Socialism system (mid-1950s-mid-1980s) is analyzed in the future of this paradox. The image of the late socialism arising in the book is fundamentally different from the usual stereotypes, according to which Soviet reality can be reduced to a description based on simple contrasts: official / unofficial culture, totalitarian language / free language, political suppression / civil resistance, public lies / hidden Truth.
