Here is the most terrible, most cruel, most uncompromising book about the First World War. A book, every word in which is true.
Frederick Manning (1882–1935) was born in Australia and became famous as a poet, and in 1903 moved to England. From childhood, manning was distinguished by poor health and an indomitable spirit, therefore, with the beginning of the First World War, despite a number of failures, he managed to get to the front as a volunteer. He landed in the midst of the battle of Somma - one of the most bloody battles of the Western Front. The one saw and experienced a serious imprint on his subsequent life, and in 1929 he released the novel “Intimate places of Fortune”, the prototype of one of the characters of which, Borna, became Manning himself.
Intimate places of Fortune became the standard of military prose for English literature. No wonder Friedrich Manning called such different authors as Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound among his teachers
