This is a book about people who live in thoughts about Villem Barents and go in his footsteps to New Earth in the final decade of the 20th century, as soon as the Russian Arctic becomes open to foreigners.
400 years after historical Arctic swimming, the Dutch returned to the place where their compatriots winter. For all of us, whose childhood and youth fell on the era of the Cold War, the new land was like on another planet. Lying behind impassable perennial ice, and later firmly closed by an iron curtain, the archipelago remained unattainable for many generations. But the world has changed quickly and unexpectedly. Together with our newly acquired Russian friends, Dutch researchers and adventurers studied the remains of wintering and were engaged in the search for the ship and graves of the Dutch pioneers. Twenty -five years later, leafing through our old expeditionary magazines, we see that they amazingly reflect the spirit of that time: our joy from recognizing this extraordinary land and from meeting each other
