In 1940, about eighteen thousand Jews lived in the Hague. Among them are six -year -old Lin and her parents, and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and cousins. When in 1942 it became obvious what the Nazi occupation threatens Jews, the parents tried to save her daughter. So Lin ended up in a foster family, the first of a series of families, houses, secret shelters, which she had to change in three years. Thanks to the most ordinary people who underground helping Jewish children in the Netherlands during the Second World War, Lin survived in the Holocaust. After the release, she returned to the first foster family, the Van Esov family. Bart Van Es, a British philologist, a teacher of Oxford, always knew that his grandparents sheltered a Jewish girl, who was brought up as his child. Lin was part of his family, but some event in the past broke off all ties. He goes on a trip to the Netherlands to find Lin to find out and tell her story. Documentary research has become a deeply personal experience for the author. The book was awarded the British Costa Prize in 2018
