The experience of being in the Russian Empire had a huge impact on the legal consciousness and legal practices of Muslims of Central Asia. Interaction with the colonial authorities changed the attitude of the residents of the region to their rights and proceedings, and the results of these changes were manifested both at the institutional level and at the level of the legal culture of the population. In his book, Paolo Sartori demonstrates how the legal consciousness of Muslims in the conditions of the colonial administration was functioning and transformed into everyday life. Based on the concept of postcolonialism, global history and legal pluralism, the author seeks to revise the dominant views on the colonial history of the region as a whole and the history of law in Central Asia in particular. The study is based on the rich material of the archives of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia and covers the period from the end of the 18th century to the fall of the Romanov empire. Paolo Sartori is an employee of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, editor of Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient "
