In the history of Russian geographical discoveries and research of the first half of the 19th century, perhaps the most important in its value is the Antarctic expedition of captain of the 2nd rank Faddei Fadeevich Bellingshausen and Lieutenant Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev on the Vostok sloats and "peaceful" 1819-1821, specially equipped for the study of the southern polar sea and discoveries at the South Pole. It is known that the southern land has long attracted the attention of many scientists and sailors, but unusually harsh nature - floating ice in the ocean around it and a long polar night - represented a great obstacle to researchers. Few dared to penetrate the southern latitudes of the Antarctic countries.
