Henri Pyrenne is perhaps one of the most prominent and famous Belgian historians and public figures at the beginning of the 20th century. His ideas were influenced by Blok Mark and the views of the French school of Annals, specializing in social history. The works of Pyrenne helped the development of the historiography of the medieval city to this day underlie studies in the field of urbanism
