Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin published the first eight volumes of his unique “history” in 1818 in the amount of three thousand copies. At that time, it was a risky giant circulation. The price of all books of the series was also huge - 50 rubles, twice as much as the monthly salary of the clerk. However, in less than a month, all books were sold out! The history of Karamzin read literally the entire enlightened audience of that time, because no one previously wrote about domestic history. And the point was not only in the magnificent knowledge of ancient manuscripts, which Karamzin studied for many years in the archives of the Synod, the Hermitage, the Academy of Sciences, the Public Library, Moscow University and the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. And not only in the impartial presentation of the events, for which the conservatives considered the “history” to be dangerous, and the liberals were a preaching of monarchism. In the first place, the very style of the presentation of Karamzin made the impression to the public. After all, before sitting down for this gigantic work, the author did a huge work on the modernization of the literary language of that time. He made him alive, spoken. It is no accident that the “letters of the Russian traveler” written by him at the end of the 18th century immediately brought him the glory of a talented writer. However, later, Karamzin interrupted the composition of fiction and, in his own words, cut his hair into historians. He perfectly understood that the systematic and complete presentation of Russian history with all its bright and dark pages is immeasurably more important for the formation of civil consciousness than any literary crafts. It is no coincidence that today Karamzin’s “History” is the strong foundation on which all modern works are based on the history of our country. During his lifetime, Karamzin managed to bring his work to the description of the end of the Time of Troubles. Later, all 12 volumes of his “history” were repeatedly reprinted. The uniqueness of this publication is in a magnificent illustrative row. The canonical text of Karamzin is also accompanied by the miniatures of the famous Radziwill Chronicle of the 13th century - the oldest illustrations of “Tale of Bygone Years”, and miniatures from the facial chronicle arch, made for Ivan the Terrible. A set consisting of 10,000 sheets containing 17,000 color miniatures covers the story from the creation of the world to 1567. This unique handwritten work is not accidentally called the king-book.
There are many other illustrations in the publication-the drawings of V.P. Vereshchagin from his album of the history of the Russian state in the images of its sovereign representatives and reproductions of paintings by masters of historical painting.
“The Russian history will have to teach in Karamzin. “History of the Russian state” is not only the work of the great writer, but also the feat of an honest man ” - as A. S. Pushkin described the work of N. M. Karamzin. V.P. Vereshchagin “History of the Russian state in the images of sovereign rulers”, paintings of Russian and foreign artists
