The book was based on “Lectures on the History of Byzantium "(1917) of the largest Russian and later the American Byzantine and Arabist Academician Alexander Vasiliev (1867-1953) The events of a seven -year period of Byzantine history are unfolding in front of us, a magnificent Constantinople arises, passing, replacing one another, dynasties, which ruled almost half of the world. The book is full of colorful portraits of emperors, hierarchs of the Church and cultural figures, the facts of domestic and foreign policy, descriptions of wars and popular uprisings, the details of economic life and disputes about faith, excursions in the history of art, literature and education, finally it tells about the ceremonials of the courtyard and the life of simple the inhabitants of the empire. Alexander Vasiliev constantly returned to this work and until her last publication in 1952, being already recognized as the creator of American Byzantinism, a world -famous scientist, made changes and additions to it, which were taken into account in this book
