The work of Johann Joachim Winkelman “History of Art of Antiquity” is the first example of a scientific history of art, which does not consider individual masters, but art as a whole in its prime and decline. Not limited to the description of the plot and an assessment of the reliability of the transmission of nature, the historian tried to characterize the language of images, the artistic features of a work, becoming one of the creators of the art history analysis methodology. The translation, comments and scientific equipment of the book was prepared by I.E. Babanov (1936–1994) - researcher of European and Eastern culture, specialist in antiquity and the era of education
