The corporal, and later Feldfebel Hans Rot began to keep his diary in the spring of 1941, when the 299th division in which he fought, as part of the 6th Army, was preparing to attack the Soviet Union. In accordance with the plan of Operation Barbarossa, the division during stubborn battles moves south of Pripyat swamps. At the end of the same year, the company unit participated in the closure of the encirclement around Kyiv, and later in fierce battles near Stalingrad, in the battles for Kharkov, Voronezh and Eagle. Almost daily, the author without embellishment described everything that he saw with his own eyes: bloody battles and brutal reprisal against the population in the occupied territories, a harsh soldier’s life and a dream of returning to a peaceful life. In 1944, the feldfebel Hans Roth went missing in the Vitebsk boiler, but three diaries with a description of the hostilities in which he took part were preserved. Only many years later they were discovered by the grandchildren of the company and made the notes of the notes of their grandfather
