The book of the famous Russian writer and historian Viktor Smirnov is the first large -scale project dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War on ancient Novgorod land. The small territory of the modern Novgorod region became the Arena of the grandiose in the dramatic intensity of the struggle that influenced the entire course of the war. Certain chapters of the book are devoted to battles and strategic operations, the occupation regime and the partisan movement, the feat of the rear workers and the epic of the Renaissance. The bright author’s text is supplemented by the memoirs of participants in events, unique documentary evidence and photographic materials. As an application, brief biographies of the heroes of the Soviet Union, who performed exploits on Novgorod land, and heroes, natives of the Novgorod region, are given.
