Catholicism and Catholic worship have always attracted the attention of researchers, but in our country this issue was not subjected to careful scientific analysis, which may be related to the dominance of the Byzantine Orthodox rite in Russia until recently. The study of Western traditions began to actualize at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries, when after the dominance of Soviet ideology it became possible to study religious problems and Christian culture using the methodology of various scientific disciplines.
In connection with the reforms of the second Vatican Cathedral of the second half of the XX century. The structure and form of Roman Catholic worship were significantly changed. After the approval of the main provisions of this cathedral, many liturgical books were updated, the translation of worship into national languages was made, and the Mass began to face people. Those liturgical books that have not yet been translated into national languages include a collection of official liturgical chants - "Graduale Romanum" in 1974, containing the texts of church holidays for singing during the mass. In Russia and some other countries, instead of canonical chants, paralygic songs in the national language began to perform.
This could be due to the difficulties of arranging into different languages of the Gregorian melodies that are rooted in the Latin tradition. Despite the fact that at the present time the performance of paralygic songs is widespread at the western rite of the Western rite, individual parishes could revive the canonical performance of the Roman Gradual’s chants on simple Gregorian melodies.
This monograph is the first attempt to translation into Russian of the main chants "Graduale Romanum" of the 1974 edition in the context of the interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of sacred texts, which were practically unchanged from the Middle Ages to the present day. The presented material can be interesting to musicians, historians, classic philists, Western Christians (Russian Catholics), representatives of the humanitarian intelligentsia and all those interested in these issues
