In 1871, a German national state appeared on the map of Europe - the German Empire. This event is inextricably linked with the name of one of the most outstanding statesmen of the 19th century - the “Iron Chancellor” Otto von Bismarck. “Bismarck Empire, Bismarck Era”, “Bismarck Age” - that’s what the period of German history from 1871 to 1890 is usually called today. The role of the Iron Chancellor in the life of the country was really huge. It was his policy that made a decisive contribution to the unification of German states around Prussia. He was the author of the project of the imperial constitution, the creator of the political structures of the new state. He almost solely led German diplomacy and played a decisive role in the formation of the country"s domestic political course. Nevertheless, the history of Germany of the 1870-1880s is much wider than the biography of its first minister. Along with the name Bismarck, it contains many other names. This is Helmut von Moltke and Alfred Krupp, Werner von Simes and August Bebel, Robert Koch and Empress Augusta. Finally, these are millions of “nameless” Germans who came to parliamentary elections, moving from villages to cities that read novels with a continuation or the Social Democratic newspaper “Forward!”. These people will be discussed in the book
