From late antiquity to early Middle Ages. The formation of the structures of power and its images in the kingdom of the Franks during the reign of Merovingians (V-VIII centuries)
The transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages was one of the most important civilizational turns, within the framework of which the civilization of the Mediterranean and the barbarians who were on its borders were able to find ways to adapt to each other and create the basis for the synthesis of new civilizational principles, on which the civilization of the Middle Ages subsequently arose. Thus, the kingdom of the Franks is more advisable to consider not as a tribal education that has settled on Roman soil and not as a union of Frankish and Gallo-Roman elements. The images of the Kingdom of Franks created by contemporaries, which arise before us as a result of a study of historical works, hagiographic literature and judicial protocols, are not "barbaric" or "Roman" (and not their synthesis), but a provincial system of representations equally understandable as a gallows -Rhimlans, and the Meroving rulers and their surroundings. Thus, the process of Romano -German synthesis is seen differently - as the merger of two cultures, which had a common denominator in the form of a "provincial" political and legal culture. The barbaric kingdoms occupied a special place in the early medieval historical process - they were not only an embryo of a new, medieval order, but also a special phenomenon, the roots of which went into the self -consciousness of the Roman borderland, into a special, not completely romance culture of Roman provinces
