The last major geographical discovery of the 20th century at one time remained almost unnoticed by contemporaries: the hydrographic expedition of the North Arctic Ocean ended in the midst of the First World War, so that the gain of the Emperor Nicholas II (now the Northern Land Archipelago) was then noted by specialists. Most participants in the majority either died in the civilian or, as the head of the expedition in 1913-1915. B. A. Vilkitsky, ended up in exile.
The book that you hold in your hands includes memories and reports on this great journey along the Northern Sea Route from East to West. Some of the materials presented are published for the first time, some saw the light more than 100 years ago and have not been reprinted since then. The authors of the memoirs are the doctor E. E. Arngold, the captain of the 2nd rank N. A. Transz and the sailor A. I. Kireev.
It is described in detail in the collection and on the courts of the expedition - icebreaking steamers "Taimyr" and "Vaigach", which played an important role in the history of the Russian Arctic. In addition, the book includes many additional materials that help to more fully present a picture of the hydrographic expedition of the Arctic Ocean.
The memoirs and articles published in this collection significantly complement the history of one of the outstanding polar expeditions of the Russian fleet and are our duty to memory before domestic scientists, officers, sailors and shipbuilders whose common efforts were realized by the last major geographical discovery on Earth.
