Russia has the largest forest in the world. This is a natural resource, which is the basis of the country"s environmental and economic security, containing huge potential opportunities. The whole traditional culture of Russians and many other peoples of Russia is permeated with forest. On an interdisciplinary basis (history, ecology, historical geography, etc), the book presents the history of forest in the 18th - beginning of the 20th century: accommodation, state forest policy, regional forestry structure, forest property, protection and the most important types of forest use: industry and crafts , fuel, external and domestic trade, hunting, as well as a forest as an object of natural and cultural heritage. The territorial boundaries of the study cover the forests of European Russia, where in the period under review, the history of the interaction of forest and power, forest and society unfolded in the entirety. The state forest policy in the forest sphere in the period under consideration is an important historical experience that clearly compensates with the modern practice of forest problems, which are heuristic value in the formation of a new environmental consciousness, environmental culture and at the same time creating fundamentally new soci -liability systems
