The monograph is devoted to the study of the processes of the evolution of the daily life of the merchants - the elite group as part of the city estate of pre -revolutionary Russia - during the capitalist modernization of the country. On the example of the merchants of the Tula province, the following aspects were considered: the composition of the group, the organization of entrepreneurial activity, the number of family, marriages and mesallangs, intra -family conflicts, education and education of children, as well as the features of houses, interiors, forms of leisure and the appearance of the merchants of the second half of the XIX - beginning XX century. The work is based on a wide range of various sources, both published (legislative documents, literary monuments, sources of personal origin, photo documents), and unpublished (materials of the State Archive of the Tula Region (GATO) and the State Archive of the Oryol Region (BUOO GAOO)).
