On August 23, 1939, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed a non -aggression agreement known as Molotov’s Pact - Ribbentrop. The secret additional protocol to this agreement, which actually outlined the “territorial and political reconstruction” of the Baltic states and Poland, predetermined the further development of history in the 20th century. 8 days after the signing of the contract, the Armed Forces of Germany crossed the borders of Poland, a few days later England, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany, and on September 17, 1939, Soviet troops entered the territory of Poland. British historian Roger Murchaus analyzes the prerequisites and consequences of this “Devil"s Union” and tries to find the answer to the question: did Hitler and Stalin believe in the possibility of the joint existence of two powers who had divided Europe, or this was originally only a tactical trick, designed to pull the time before an inevitable military strike ?
