We are Nikolai Svechin, Valery Vvedensky and Ivan Podonin - we write historical detectives. Our literary heroes investigate crimes in the Russian Empire in the late XIX - early XX centuries. And in order to more accurately describe that era, we, before sitting down for the next story or novel, are studying sources: memoirs and diaries, newspapers and magazines, reference books and reports, scientific works of those years and fiction, archival documents. However, far from all the information we know can “pack” in the format of a fiction work. Therefore, for the time being, many interesting facts remained in our notebooks. And then the idea appeared to write a popular science book: to tell about the history of the St. Petersburg detective police, about how they searched in the former times of criminals in the capital, about the fate of royal detectives and their affairs
