The book is devoted to the study of the customs of cities of medieval England. This issue is extremely important, since the basis of not only the legal, but also the social life of people of the Middle Ages were a variety of local customs, and without their study it is difficult to present the specifics of this era. What is a custom? The custom can be defined as a historically established, based on the repeatability of actions and, thus, the rule of behavior in a particular sphere of life, which has become a habit, i.e. representing a special algorithm, enshrined in the memory of generations by the tradition of applying this “rule-action”. In essence, the custom was a certain invisible behavioral vector, legitimizing the everyday life of the Middle Ages.
However, the custom was not identical to ordinary law (although sometimes these concepts are used as similar), but rather made up its intangible core. It was an unwritten legal norm of a moral nature for the organization of “correct action” (activity) in a particular sphere of life, and this lack of fixed norms was one of the notable features of the socio-legal space of the Middle Ages in the early stages of its development.
The book is addressed to medical historians, jurists and political scientists, as well as all the cities of medieval England interested in the social and legal life
