The book of the candidate of historical sciences R.N. Evdokimova is devoted to one of the difficult periods in the history of the Cossacks, which covered the events of the First World War and the initial stage of the Great Russian Revolution. At this time, the contradictions between the traditional Cossack layer and the new social reality did not only question the ability of the Cossack troops to successfully perform combat missions, but also the feasibility of the existence of the Cossacks themselves as a special community. Circumstances demanded to proceed with the deep modernization of the military and administrative structure and socio-economic organization of the Cossacks, as well as the formation of fundamentally new ideas about its place in the state and social system of Russia.
Relatively smoothly this modernization took place in the conditions of the Transcaucasian theater of military operations, which was associated with its remoteness and finding the largest number of Cossack units and formations represented by all the main clans of weapons
