Plutarch (approx. 46-Oct. 127)-the famous Greek writer and philosopher-moderation, educated on the traditions of ancient Hellas and lived with the hope of the revival of Hellenistic culture within the Roman Empire. In the literature, he is known primarily as the author of “comparative biographies” written in the form of “moralistic and psychological studies” (S.S. Averintsev) and constituting a whole “portrait gallery” of outstanding statesmen of the past. The works of Plutarch are distinguished by the “sense of proportion and clarity of the spirit” (Theodore Mommzen), they laid noble educational goals, so interest in them does not weaken in all eras.
