The book, saturated with unique details of merchant life, collects the memoirs of Russian businessmen, whose childhood was in the second half of the 19th century. Their grandfathers and great -grandfathers were peasants, as a rule, serfs, and almost completely illiterate. Their fathers, weaned in elementary school, already knew how to write and read, but their education was limited to this. They themselves entered into life, when in the merchant class patriarchal methods of learning were already combined with new trends in education. Therefore, among them there are those who were brought up by tutors according to the noble model, studied in gymnasiums, entered higher educational institutions, and those who, having graduated from the county school, were immediately included in the family business and comprehended commerce in practice. Be that as it may, in the Russian commercial people, the understanding of the fact that education was necessary, and this not only determined the future of its young representatives, but also prepared the heyday of entrepreneurship and trade in Russia at the end of the 19th century
