For Russian intellectual history, the "Philosophical Letters" of Peter Chaadaev and the figure of the author itself are of paramount importance. Officially declared insane for his ideas, Chaadaev enjoys the reputation of one of the most famous and demanded domestic philosophers, whom the researchers either declare the founding of Westernity with his critical view of the present and future of Russia, then forgive the glory of the Prophet of Slavophilism with his faith in the future greatness of the country. But what if you look at these texts and Chaadaev himself? Deeply immersed in the intellectual life of the 1830s, M. Velizhev sets his task to abandon the stereotypes that have developed around the creator of "philosophical letters". Exploring the circumstances of the scandalous publication of the first of the articles of the cycle in 1836, M. Velizhev seeks to reconstruct the microcontexts of Chaadaevsky in order to show the meaning of this unique history for people of that era. The monograph also haunts another task - to use the process against the writer and the publishers of the "philosophical writing" as a prism through which you can distinguish the internal logic of more global phenomena: the formation of a political system and the mechanism for making significant government decisions in the Russian Empire, the formation of law enforcement practices, crystallization of the structure of ideological areas and the emergence of new forms of public polemics about politics, power and history. Mikhail Velizhev? Candidate of Philology, PhD, specialist in Russian and European intellectual history of the New Age
