The book dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the outstanding Russian historian, an expert on the European culture of the Renaissance, a specialist in philosophy and book science, Alexander Khaimovich Gorfunkel, is called up, corresponding to the breadth of the interests of the anniversary, to present the historical and cultural panorama of the development of the West and Russia for several centuries. On the pages of the publication, some features of the Renaissance worldview, its philosophical and theological aspects, were revealed, the forms of self -reflection of representatives of humanistic education were analyzed, as well as attempts to understand, decrypt the image of “other”, studied the ideological sources of free -thinking of the Renaissance and Reformation, including specific polemical strategies authors of the XV-XVII centuries, identified the original features of the typographic business and book culture of the past. Finally, special attention is paid to the study of the historical and biographical aspects of the development of humanitarian knowledge in Russia, displayed in the fate of the most prominent scientists of the 20th century.
