Königsberg was not just a large fortress city on the coast of the Baltic Sea, but was a political and strategic center of the entire military system of Eastern Prussia, and its capture finally buried the centuries-old idea of German oriental colonization. The East Prussian offensive operation, which has become one of the largest strategic operations of the Red Army, lasted almost four months at the front with a total length of 550 km. In difficult conditions of the terrain and adverse weather, the Soviet troops had to overcome the fortified areas prepared for a long, stubborn and bloody defense (Königsberg himself was protected by the Fort system and numerous stone buildings) At the same time, the Nazis supported significant naval forces and they were ready to give a decisive battle.
