This book presents a selection of news of Bakhchisarai, preserved in the works of European travelers who arrived in the Crimea after its first accession to Russia in 1783. The image of the Bakhchisaray, the former capital of the Crimean Khanate, acquired new meanings: the Russian government deliberately "preserved" its appearance, thereby trying to demonstrate the concern for the “Gentiles”, but for local residents it was an important psychological center of attraction, the symbolic text of which spoke of the past. The published notes of 21 travelers are a unique combination of actual data on the history, ethnography, economics, architecture and archeology of the micrregion, in which the Muslim, Christian and Karaite communities coexisted, and subjective assessments that reveal the features of European perception of other cultures and the formation of stereotypes about the Crimea. Each published passage from the source is equipped with an introductory article telling about its author and the necessary comments. Most of the sources are published in the original translation.
For professional researchers, teachers and historians, as well as all those interested in the history of Crimea.
