The book is a comprehensive study of such a phenomenon of ancient Roman civilization as gladiatorial games. On the basis of a wide range of written, epigraphic and archaeological sources, the author considers the origin of the gladiatorial games and related structures, professional organization, preparation and weapons of gladiators, as well as their participation in the military-political events of the 1st century. Of particular interest are a detailed analysis of the visual materials regarding the conduct of gladiatorial games in the territory of the Northern Black Sea region, and the identification of their specifics in comparison with traditional forms of such spectacles in the Roman Empire
