The monograph for the first time covers in detail the history of the organization and activities of research expeditions in the Northern Arctic Ocean at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries.
The main organizer of the hydrographic expedition for the study of the sea route to Siberia was Andrei Ippolitovich Vilkitsky (1858-1913), general, head of the Main Hydrographic Directorate of the Maritime Ministry. The activities of the expeditions A.I. Vilkitsky was the beginning of a large -scale systematic study and development of the Arctic and, above all, the tracks of the Northern Sea Route. A wonderful galaxy of researchers, experienced sailors and polar explorers was collected. Not a single country in the world, except Russia, had the necessary personnel, technologies and knowledge for such an enterprise.
The book is based on the materials of the Russian State Archive of the Navy (RGAVMF) and the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA), publications of the XIX-XX centuries. In the monograph, considerable attention is paid to archival documents, most accurately conveying not only the essence of events and the spirit of the past era, but also allowing to introduce texts in the scientific circulation, which help the reader fully judge all the difficulties of preparing and implementing expeditions in the Arctic
