The book “Architects, Kong, Pontiffs in Medieval Europe”, which opens the series “Polystoria”, was based on the research conducted by the Laboratory of Medievistic Research of the NIS on the problems of the medieval history of the West and the East. The book considers the range of issues of cultural, political and religious interaction in a wide geographical range, from Byzantium, the Caucasus and Russia to Scandinavia and Western countries, from the early Middle Ages to the early New Age. Little investigated, but historically important situations, such as the visit of the Roman pope to Constantinople in 711, separate objects, as the banner of the Konung Sverir, become the subject of comprehensive analysis along with such large and largely traditional problems for historiography, as the genesis of Russia, Christian architecture in Abkhazia and naturalistic features of Gothic plasticity or Judeo-Christian polemic. The book is completed by the publication of the first full Russian translation of the famous treatise “On the insignificance of the human state” of Cardinal Lotario de Senya (c. 1195)
The book will be interesting to historians, philologists, art historians, religious scholars, culturalists and political scientists.
