He began his diary in September 1941 - at a time when German troops came close to Moscow. Day after day, Kiler looked after the wounded, observing bloody wounds, death, illness and hunger. A peaceful person in the soul, he is increasingly imbued with a disgust to the war, to how it destroys the soul and life of those who, one way or another, is drawn into it. He cannot understand why people are forced to kill each other, and says to himself: We should not strive for conquering the world, but to serve it
