"And everything shuddered" is the first full study of how the Soviet government and citizens responded to large natural disasters and disasters. While traditional studies are focused on scientific aspects, the book of Nigel Raaba considers the political consequences and social opportunities that arise after the disaster. The author examines in detail several largest disasters in the history of the Soviet Union: earthquakes in Crimea, in Ashgabat, Tashkent and Spitak, as well as an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The focus of his attention is the reaction of the authorities at different times and their perception from society. Of particular interest is how such events in the press are covered in documentary and feature cinema. And a separate large and interesting topic is the role of a volunteer movement in the fight against disasters and in the elimination of their consequences
