The book is the fundamental work of an outstanding domestic historian and archaeologist Academician B.A. Rybakova. The author turns to the topic of the Russian epic: the conjugation of a written tradition - according to the materials of the annals - and oral epic tradition. Based on the attraction of a huge source and folklore material, the author shows many plot and semantic parallels between these traditions. B.A. Rybakov classifies the beginning of the Russian chronicle to the 9th century, thereby revising the traditionally accepted dating. The author manages to show the possibilities of deciphering the epic works of Russian folklore and their use in the framework of historical research.
