The author of the book is the princess Anna, the daughter of Tsar Alexei I, the Savior of the East Roman (Byzantine) empire, the founder of the Komnin dynasty. In early youth, she became the wife of the alleged heir to the tsarist power, a mature woman tried to take away the power from her brother, failed and lived since then at the monastery, and in advanced years she wrote the story of his father"s reign.
Anna was bold, active and educated, lived at the time of the heyday of imperial culture. She knew and saw a lot, participated in many respects, and she reported she is always valuable, and often unique. Knowing the state machine of the empire, the life and customs of the court, the life of the Church, she writes about the first crusade, about wars with the Normans, Pechenegs, Turks, about rebellions, intrigues, troubles and heresies.
