This book is about the views characteristic of the majority of the Russian people inherent in it for a long time. Authors - Russian ethnography specialists - attracted the vast material of diverse and little known sources. They talk about those beliefs that manifested themselves every day, in the way of life. The Orthodox belief was the main attitude to the living and the dead, the behavior in the house, at the gathering and in pilgrimage, on the procession and in battle. Vera formed the ideal of the monarch-impertor of God, influenced the state consciousness of the people, permeated the conciliar solution of affairs in the community, determined the attitude to work, wealth and moral foundations of the family, the cleansing power of repentance and the joy of creativity. The preservation or revival of these traditions in modern conditions is considered.
